The plaque says, "This iconic symbol of Brigantine, NJ is not an actual working lighthouse but rather a monument or tourist attraction used to help in the sale of real estate on the island. The Lighthouse, which was built in 1926 by The Island Development Company, has served as a museum, gift shop, police station and the city jail over the years. By the mid 1990s, the lighthouse had fallen into disrepair and was refurbished by a group of dedicated volunteers in 1995. This marker was dedicated in March 0f 2017. #1."
