It was erected to commemorate the foundation of The Guide Dogs for the blind Association in New Brighton in 1931.

The dog is wearing a harness that the dog's owner would use whilst the dog guides them.

The Guide Dogs for the blind Association is a registered charity ythat trains dogs for uses as guides by blind and partially sighted people throughout the UK.

During World War II, the building used by the association was requisitioned for used by the armed forces and they moved to Leamington Spa where they are still based. This statue is a reminder of where the story began.
