The House of Nobility is was constructed in the Dutch renaissance style from 1641 - 1672. Four architects are responsible for its design. Simon de la Vallée first designed the building but was killed by the nobleman, Erik Oxenstierna, one week after construction began. Heinrich Wilhelm took over in 1645 and continued until 1652 when Joost Vingboons became the architect. Finally the building was finished under the direction of Jean de la Vallée. Joost Vingboons and Jean de la Vallée are credited with the final appearance with the beautiful façade of red bricks and sandstone pediments attributed to Joost Vingboons and the highly ornate roof, portals, and major parts of the interior designed by Jean de la Vallée. The roof of the building is decorated with allegorical statues.

The House of Nobility was used by the aristocracy for meetings of Parliament during the Diet of the Four Estates from 1668 to 1865, a body similar to the British House of Lords. Today, every three years, nobility gather for the Assembly of Nobles. Other organizations such as the Academy of Sciences and the Academy of Literature have used the building to celebrate special events. The great hall is also used as a meeting place for the Swedish noble families as well as for chamber concerts.
