Chùa Bao Quang - Vietnamese Buddhist nunnery in the Hamburg district of Billbrook.
In 1984 Vietnamese immigrants brought the Buddhist master Thich Nu Dieu Tam to Germany as a teacher. Since then she has been the abbess of the Bao Quang Pagoda in Hamburg, leading ceremonies and giving religious teachings for adults and young people. As deputy chairman of the Congregation of the United Vietnamese Buddhist Church in Germany, she is well known among compatriots far beyond Hamburg. "The application of the Buddhist teaching in everyday life brings much joy for the people, love for all living beings and respect for nature", says Thich Nu Dieu Tam, who is venerably lovingly called Su-Ba (= old master) by her followers. Since many people in Germany share these ideals, she is pleased about the growing general interest in Buddhism in this country. What she likes most about Germany is the "free atmosphere". She greatly appreciates the tolerance, humanity and helpfulness of the Germans. Thich Nu Dieu Tam: "The admission of the Vietnamese 'Boat People' is proof of this".
While monks at the Hamburg Vietnamese community appear at best as guest teachers, Thich Nu Dieu Tam has trained several female students here.
