"Le Char Sherman « ROMILLY »

Le ROMILLY est l'un des trois premiers chars à pénétrer dans Paris au soir du 24 août 1944. Restauré depuis peu, ce char Sherman fait la gloire de la ville car il est, selon les historiens, le premier char de la 2e division du Général Leclerc, à être entré dans Paris avec les Forces Françaises de l’Intérieur, pour libérer la place de l’Hôtel de Ville.

Libération de Paris : la ruée de la Division Leclerc
« Dans la soirée du 24, à la Croix de Berny, Leclerc ordonne au capitaine Dronne de "foncer immédiatement au coeur de Paris". Le détachement (trois chars, une quinzaine de véhicules) fonce en véritable furia et réussit à traverser les lignes allemandes en empruntant le dédale des rues de la banlieue parisienne. Il entre dans la capitale par la porte d'Italie, avec en tête de cette colonne blindée, le " Romilly " qui sera le premier char Sherman à entrer dans la ville. Il est commandé par l'adjudant CARON qui sera tué au combat le lendemain. »

Le char ROMILLY était conservé jusqu'en 1984 dans l'enceinte de la BA 914 à Romilly-sur-Seine. Depuis il se trouve à l’entrée du cimetière des Hauts Buissons, à l’angle de l’avenue Diderot et de la rue Jean Jaurès. Aux dires de certains, l'actuel char ne serait pas l'original : celui-ci aurait "disparu" après que le char libérateur ait subi un passage par Paris afin de le remettre en état.... Ces dires font partie de la rumeur populaire et aujourd'hui aucun élément concret ne vient conforter cette idée."

The ROMILLY was one of the first three tanks to enter Paris on the evening of 24 August 1944. Recently restored, this Sherman tank is the glory of the city because, according to historians, it is the first tank of General Leclerc's 2nd Division to have entered Paris with the French Forces of the Interior, to free the square of the Town Hall.

Liberation of Paris: the rush of the Leclerc Division
" On the evening of the 24th, at the Croix de Berny, Leclerc ordered Captain Dronne to "rush immediately to the heart of Paris". The detachment (three tanks, about fifteen vehicles) drove in real fury and managed to cross the German lines through the maze of streets in the Paris suburbs. He entered the capital through the Italian gate, with the "Romilly" at the head of this armoured column, which would be the first Sherman tank to enter the city. He was commanded by Warrant Officer CARON who was killed in action the following day. »

The ROMILLY tank was kept until 1984 in the BA 914 building in Romilly-sur-Seine. Since then it has been located at the entrance to the Hauts Buissons cemetery, at the corner of Avenue Diderot and Rue Jean Jaurès. According to some, the current tank would not be the original: it would have "disappeared" after the liberator tank had undergone a passage through Paris to restore it to its original state..... These statements are part of the popular rumor and today there is no concrete evidence to support this idea."
