The Cortenoeversebrug was opened on 21 August 1976 with the aim of relieving traffic in the Hanseatic city of Zutphen. In the future, the bridge would become part of a north-south motorway in the east of the Netherlands. The bridge has a length of 810 meters with a free span of 75 meters. The bridge deck is located 18 meters above the river (IJssel). The bridge has a separate lane for cyclists and walkers.
Because the dikes along the IJssel river had to be relocated, the entire area was reconstructed. The Cortenoeverseweg that runs under the bridge has also been completely redesigned. Hikers, and possibly cyclists, must have the opportunity to get to Cortenoeverseweg from the bridge. That is why a concrete staircase has been built that bridges the 18 meter height difference.
The staircase has 80 steps and is equipped with steel handrails.
