The dam is built at the south end of Lake Claremore, which is fed from the north by Dog Creek. The dam is earthen and rock, and has a concrete spillway at its west end, which crosses rock formations and rock debris. The water flows out of the lake into a continuation of Dog Creek which flows south and southwest many miles until it enters the Verdigris River.
