Peanuts were introduced to Ontario in the 1980s and are only grown in the southerly part of the province. In the 1980s and 90s the tobacco industry took a huge hit because of societal change in smoking habits and government policies. The sandy soil in this part of Ontario is perfect and the climate is warm enough.

Why are elephants and peanuts so widely connected when elephants don't even eat them. There's some interesting info on the web about the myth. Some websites like this one, (visit link) make the connection that the 1860s are when they became a popular snack and elephants were becoming a mainstream entertainment with the growth of the circus. What is more logical than to hand an elephant one of your small, tidy snacks, and what more fascinating than to watch the way he delicately handled it with his trunk?
