Almost nothing is left of Hattert Castle. An unprecedented tank battle takes place in its vicinity between the end of September and mid-October 1944. First, an American armored division takes on the Germans. The weather conditions are harsh. Rain turns the battlefield into a large mud pool in which tanks can maneuver badly. The Americans suffer heavy losses. They are relieved by a British armored and infantry division. The castle is completely destroyed during the battle.

After Operation Market Garden failed, the Allies tried to widen the corridor they had conquered from Belgium to Nijmegen. In the eastern direction, there was very great German resistance around Overloon. The area was difficult to access due to the many canals and streams and a continuous rainfall made maneuvering with heavy tanks even more difficult. The 7th American tank division came across the 107th German Panzer Brigade here. A day-long tank battle raged. The Americans suffered so many losses that they had to be relieved on October 8 by the British 11th Armored Division and the 3rd Infantry Division. The Battle of Overloon continued. The nearby castle, Hattert Castle, was completely destroyed during this battle.
