C'est grâce à ce port que La Rochelle prit de l'importance durant la Guerre de Cent Ans, puis avec la découverte de l'Amérique.
Aux XVIIe et XVIIIe siècles, le Vieux-Port de La Rochelle a drainé plus de la moitié du trafic colonial vers la Nouvelle-France, ce qui en fait aujourd'hui un lieu de pèlerinage pour de nombreux touristes."
