The Burgers’ Zoo in Arnhem is a 45-hectare zoo which makes it as one of the biggest zoos in the Netherlands. It is quite a popular tourist attraction for both German and Dutch people and it has approximately 1.5 million visitors every year.
In this zoo, the animals are given the freedom to roam and make themselves part of a big ecosystem. Because the animals are not cramped and put in cages with confinement, it makes it easier for the animals to display their natural behavior and adapt to their environment without much difficulty.
History
On March 31, 1913, Faisanterie Buitenlust, a private animal collection, was opened to the public by its owner Johan Burgers. This is the present Burgers’ Zoo that is located in Arnhem, the Netherlands. However, the original location was in the town of ‘s-Heerenberg in Gelderland near a German town called Emmerich.
Finally, in 1923, Burgers then decided to move to the city of Arnhem where it can be easily reached by visitors and which has a more centralized location. A year after, he opened the brand new Burgers’ Nature Zoo in this city.
After being greatly affected by wars, the zoo continued to have more renovations and improvements in order to save and restore it. In 2008, in the occasion of the 95th anniversary of Burgers’ Zoo, Princess Margriet opened the Burgers’ Rimba. Many kinds of Southeast Asian animals are placed where there is an outdoor area with a tropical feel and look.
Tourism
Every year, the Burgers’ Zoo in Arnhem is home to over 1 million visitors from all over the world. This zoo boasts various theme sites that can be enjoyed by both adults and children tourists. Below are the theme sites present in the zoo:
Burgers’ Dierenpark – the original zoo
Burgers’ Safari – a safari park
Burgers’ Bush – a 3.7-acre indoor tropical rainforest
Burgers’ Mangrove – a mangrove swap
Burgers’ Desert – a 1.9-acre indoor desert
Burgers’ Ocean – a 8,000,000 litre seawater aquarium wherein the two tanks are home to sharks, coral reef with tropical fish, living corals, and other invertebrates.
Burgers’ Avonturenland – acts as the zoo’s playground which opened in 2002.
Burgers’ Rimba – home to dusky leaf monkeys, golden jackals, banteng, hog deer, siamang, binturongs, gibbons, and other animals that can be found in Southeast Asia.
Burgers’ Kids Jungle – the newest attraction which opened in 2012. It is an indoor playground with a South American village vibe.

Arnhem is a city that lies within the Veluwe, a nature park in the east of the Netherlands. The zoo is popular with both Dutch and German people, and receives about 1.5 million visitors annually.
The zoo has 8 theme sites:

Burgers' Desert is a 0.75-hectare (1.9-acre) indoor desert (focusing on the Sonoran Desert).[6]
Burgers' Ocean is a 8,000,000-litre (2,100,000 US gal) seawater aquarium.[2] Two of the main tanks are the 3,000,000-litre (790,000 US gal) ocean with sharks and other fish, and the 750,000-litre (200,000 US gal) coral reef with tropical fish, living corals and other invertebrates.[7]

Burgers' Rimba (opened in 2008). The Rimba gives visitors an impression of a Southeast Asian rainforest. The animals in this display include Sumatran tigers, sun bears, binturongs, golden-cheeked gibbons, dusky leaf monkeys, Sri Lankan leopards, golden jackals, banteng, muntjac, hog deer, Eld's deer, siamang, pig-tailed macaque, reticulated python, and water monitor.

Conservation
Burgers’ Zoo has been successful enough in breeding fish and coral for their own aquarium that they can now help provide animals to other public aquariums. They use an artificial moon to stimulate sexual reproduction of corals in their reef, and also clone some 60 varieties.[9]
Besides presenting many of its animals in simulated habitat in spacious indoors ecosystems, Burgers' Zoo also has facilities for conservation and captive breeding of animals nearly extinct. The Socorro dove (Zenaida graysoni) for example does not exist outside captivity at present; it was wiped out by introduced mammals on its home island. The species is being bred in Burgers' Zoo for eventual reintroduction into the wild.
Burgers' Zoo supports several nature conservation projects. The projects are small but with a big impact.
Future For Nature Burgers' Zoo supports the Future For Nature Foundation. This foundation supports nature projects throughout the world, by awarding three cash prizes of 50,000 euros each year to three young, talented nature conservationists, so that they can continue their important nature conservation work. Every year the Future For Nature Awards are presented in Burgers' Zoo.
Belize Burgers' Zoo protects a nature reserve with an area of 355 square kilometers, together with the Swiss animal park Papiliorama in Belize.
Lucie Burgers Foundation Lucie Burgers Foundation encourages and facilitates comparative behavioral research in animals. The aim is to improve the knowledge about the natural behaviour of animals and about ecology.
