On the east façade of the St. Johannis church in Hamburg-Harvestehude there is a bronze commemorative plaque. It commemorates the persecution of the Jews in the 3rd Reich and is at the same time an apology for the silence during and about the atrocities.
The plaque reads (translated):
In 1933 almost 20000 Jewish citizens lived in Hamburg.
In 1945 there were 945.
We remained silent,
when they were disenfranchised, chased away, gassed and their synagogues were destroyed.
We ask for forgiveness and shalom.
