"FRONTENAC — After two executive sessions at its meeting Tuesday evening, the Frontenac City Council made some moves that shifted duties once filled by former City Administrator and City Clerk Doug Sellars after his letter of resignation was accepted on Aug. 18.

"The first motion the council made was in paying Sellars for his six-weeks sick leave. Councilman Tim Ziesenis made the motion which was seconded by Councilman Dave Chapetti. Councilman Trey Coleman abstained, and Council members Pat Clinton and Ethan Spurling opposed. The motion passed.

"The next move the council made was in appointing City Attorney Jennifer Brunetti as a part-time interim city administrator, which will be in effect until the beginning of next year when the council will revisit the matter. It was unanimously approved.

"The last move the council made was making interim City Clerk Jayme Mjelde’s appointment permanent. It was approved, with only Spurling opposing.

"Holding the office of the court clerk while Sellars was in office, Mjelde said in a phone interview that she will take on both duties for the city as its court clerk and city clerk.

"The council also approved a utility easement for Craw-Kan, which will install fiber optic cables on a city property next to one of its list stations, Mjelde said.

"In other business, Public Safety Director John Zafuta earlier in the meeting relayed information that there were power outages throughout town over the weekend, because of a traffic accident that took down some power poles. He informed the council the matter is currently being handled.

"Zafuta also wanted to notify the public of the city’s website and some of its changes.

'“One of the things that I want to get out to the public is that there are a couple of features on there for the public to use,” Zafuta said. “There’s a gallery, where the citizens can submit their photos to the website ... There’s also a spot for job listings, so the local businesses can post any job openings that they have.”

"Zafuta said there is also a real estate section, but that they’re currently looking into it because with the package that they have, the listings are limited.

"Ann Brown, with the Frontenac Education Foundation, asked the council for approval to lease part of the soccer field for the Festa Italiana event on Sept. 26.

"Brunetti only advised the city to request the foundation obtain insurance for the event, because the city had been the recipient of a lawsuit before after someone was injured because the ground was “uneven.”

'“It’s not a manicured location like the ball parks are and so as your city attorney, I’m making you aware this isn’t a groomed location,” Brunetti said.

"Brunetti also mentioned if lighting could be an issue, but Brown said they have received donations to use construction lights.

"As long as the event is insured, the council approved the request to use the location at 519 E. McKay.

"A cereal malt beverage license was also approved for Festa Italiana.

"A few of Frontenac’s residents approached the council about the formation of a homecoming event for the city, to take place on a Saturday in the month of June. A few council members enthusiastically supported the idea and the city will be updated on a monthly basis on how funds are being raised and how the event is being coordinated.

"Mayor Jim Kennedy and the council took the time to recognize the success of the coaches and players for the Frontenac Youth League All Stars between ages 9 and 10.

"The next meeting is scheduled for noon on Monday, Sept. 21." ~ The Morning Sun, By Jesse Brown, Sept. 8, 2015
