From 1890 through 2011 thousands of sheep were driven from the Phoenix area north to the White Mountains in central Arizona. A section of their path crosses the Salt River and ascends Blue Point Wash. Built into the rock face on the side of the wash is a kiln or oven. Although there isn't a written record of the oven the supposition is that it served as a lime kiln. Limestone is available in the immediate area and the product would have served several important functions in the early development of the area. The entrance to the oven is on the wash floor. The chimney was cut through the rock and was lined with blocks of stone that can still be seen.
