The Sanibel Colored School, as it was known historically, is one of only
three remaining historic schools for black children in Lee County. It was established in 1929 at the end of Lee County's first concerted effort to consolidate the school system and provide modern school facilities.

In April 1929, the Lee County Board of Public Instruction (LBPI) authorized the purchase of a small wood frame building on Sanibel Island to house a school for black children. The building, which was
constructed about 1915, was owned by the Florida Baptist Convention of Jacksonville and apparently hadserved as a Baptist church. It was sold with its surrounding property to the board for $1,500. The Sanibel Colored School remained open throughout the remainder of the historic period. It was probably closed in the early 1960s when the present Sanibel Elementary School was constructed.
