Nimmitabel is a small rural town on the Monaro Plains on the southern tablelands of NSW. The town is steeped in farming history. For over a century it has been one of the premium wool growing areas in NSW.

The town has been known by quite a few variations in spelling, as the word is from the Aboriginal term meaning: "Dividing of the Waters", as there are several rivers that flow from this area, and some to the coast, and others to the inland to form the Murray River.

The sign at the southern entry, on the Monaro Highway has an artistic rendition of the notable tourist drawcard, the 'Old Mill' which wasn't used as it was planned, as 'it was too close to a public road', and the moving shadow of the vanes would frighten the horses!
