The plaque says, "This iconic symbol of Brigantine, NJ is not an actual working lighthouse but rather a monument or tourist attraction used to help in the sale of real estate on the island. The Lighthouse, which was built in 1926 by The Island Development Company, has served as a museum, gift shop, police station and the city jail over the years.
