This pillar is situated at 102 metres high on Knox Hill, an area of low hills four miles west of the Angus coastal town of Arbroath. The pillar is set completely amidst gorse and whin bushes on one of the many hillocks and is difficult to find. Not surprisingly it remains in good condition, but due to the surrounding foliage there are no views despite overlooking the North Sea to the south-east.

STEEPNESS: Not much in the short climb from the public road to the south.

TERRAIN: A combination of pastureland and very tough going amidst gorse and thorny bushes.

ACCESSIBILITY: The pillar lies only a hundred yards or so north of the narrow public road that winds its way south of the hill, but from here it is a torturous route across a series of barbed wire fences along with the bushes that must also be contended with. A direct course to the south avoids much of this across a grassy field but an electric fence bars progress near the top.

NAVIGATION: Despite the short distance from the road this is one of the most difficult pillars to locate. A north-easterly course up from the road just east of an old quarry passes across a double fence and then an easterly course along the north side of the electric fence reaches a clearing of pastureland to the east of the gorse covered hillock where the pillar may be visible in a slight clearing. A clamber through the bushes up the final twenty feet or so is unavoidable.

DANGER: Barbed and electric fences, along with prickly bushes.
