The Spode factory dates to 1775 and continued to produce Spode wares (ceramics, pottery and homeware) until 2008. During the 19th century, Spode became one of the two largest potteries in Staffordshire, with 22 bottle ovens and employing around a thousand people.
There is a shield above the sub station doors with the coat of arms of Stoke on Trent. This version of the coat of arms was granted in 1912 when Stoke was a county borough. Subsequently the arms changed in 1925 when Stoke was awarded city status, so the sub station was presumably built between 1912 and 1925.
