The statue depicts a Native American wearing a feathered headdress and is situated atop a rock outcropping approximately 100 feet above Wissahickon Creek in Fairmount Park. The figure's right hand is raised to his forehead as he looks into the distance; his left hand rests on his right knee. The statue is known locally as Tedyuscung or Teedyuscung although it was not intended to depict a specific individual. Tedyuscung (1700-1763) was a member of the Lenni Lenape people and acted as spokesman for the Delaware Indians in their negotiations with the government of Colonial Pennsylvania. The marble statute, which was created by John Massey Rhind, is 144 inches tall on a limestone base and was placed in its current location in 1902. The statue was commissioned by Mr & Mrs Charles Henry to replace a wooden statue that was installed in 1856; the original statue has been preserved by the Germantown Historical Society.
