At the Astoria Column, you can learn about the history of the Pacific Northwest, look at beautiful art, see a gorgeous view, watch birds and nature, and have a little fun.
The Column is basically a giant memorial marker to honor all the explorers and developers who devoloped the Northwest. The artwork on the outside of the column depict the history of the northwest, from the explorer Robert Grave, to Lewis and Clark.
The 125 foot tower has 165 steps with sweeping views of the mountains, forests, Columbia River and Pacific Ocean. From the top, the kids (and the kids at heart) can fly balsamwood airplanes bought from the giftshop.
If you're a bit worried about heights or are physically challenged, there still is an excellant view from the bottom. Eagles nest nearby, and if you are there in the right season, you may see a few. You can have a picnic on the grounds, as well as go for a hike on the hill.
