Completed in 2001, the Steelworkers Memorial Park was created by the City of Bethlehem to honour those who had worked in the steel industry in Bethlehem.
The industry traced its roots in the city back to 1857, when the iron foundry first fired up. Over time, Bethlehem Iron Foundry and later Bethlehem Steel emerged. For well over 100 years the furnaces produced fine steel, used in practically every manufacturing process. However, times, and cheap imports conspired against the foundry, with production halting in the late 1990's and declaration of bankruptcy in 2001.
The memorial stands as a testament to all those in the industry. The pavers reflect many who worked in the industry, some of who died on the job.
The park is located at the intersection of Northampton and 2nd Streets in Bethlehem's industrial south side.
