Sycamore dates to the late 19th century, although there are burials down the road in the Sycamore Cemetery dating from the 1860s, maybe earlier. Their heyday was from about 1894 to 1902, when they had several businesses, a post office, and a couple of churches, including this one. Without proximity to the railroad, though, both the population and the trees for which the community is named withered away, leaving this church, the cemetery, and scattered dwellings.
The church provides a history on their website (see below), noting that they were established in 1885, meeting in the Sycamore schoolhouse up the road until they built this sanctuary in 1897. It wasn't until 1941 that the church was wired for electricity, and at that time, a basement -- no mean feat in the rocky soil in Wise County -- was completed. By 1954, they'd undergone a remodel and replaced the wood burning stove with something more modern. Modern plumbing was added in 1968, and since the 1970s, they've added a fellowship hall, a parsonage, and a tabernacle and park across the road.
