Built both in 1895 and 1949, though not terribly unusual, this is a late nineteenth century church and a mid twentieth century church.

From 1895 until 1949 the congregation of the Choteau United Methodist Church worshipped in a building across the street from the present red brick church. In July of 1949 the old 1895 church was moved across the street and set on part of the concrete foundation prepared for construction of the new church. The new church was then built around the old nave, incorporating it into the 1949 building. We assume the old nave to have been faced with the same brick which covers the rest of the building, as "old" doesn't appear anywhere on the outside, though we're guessing that at least part of the impetus for reusing the old nave was to allow the interior to remain as it was for 50 plus years, a concession to nostalgia.

With a large transept near the centre of the nave, the building has the perfect location for a corner steeple/entrance. The square steeple/bell tower is built of the identical brick as is the rest of the building up to the bottom of the belfry, with a squared metal cornice just below. The octagonal belfry, with rectangular vents on each face, is entirely metal clad. It gives way to a tapering dark coloured metal spire, finishing in a cross.

On the opening of the new church, the local paper, the Choteau Acantha, managed to squeeze an article on the auspicious occasion onto its front page. The beginning of that article follows.
To Conduct First Services
In New Methodist Church
The Choteau Acantha | December 15, 1949
Doors of the new Methodist church in Choteau will open for the first time to the congregation and all interested friends this coming Sunday morning, Dec. 18, for a Christmas service at 11 o'clock, the Rev. H. L. Engdahl announced today. The choir, which will number about 40 voices, will sing a Fred Waring arrangement of three Christmas carols, and the anthem, "Let Mount Zion Rejoice," which they have been rehearsing, under the direction of Vernon Alf, for many weeks. Mrs. Marion Averill is pianist for the church and choir and will provide instrumental music for the service.

Rev A. L. Stevenson of Atlanta, Ga., will be the morning speaker. Rev. J. Homer MaGee, superintendent of the Glacier district of the Methodist church, will be present and take part in the service. The local pastor, Reverend Engdahl, will preside. A feature of the service will be the presentation, in a solemn manner, of gifts for the fund necessary to complete payments on the building, Reverend Engdahl said.

Sunday school will still be held in the Masonic hall and at other temporary places this Sunday to avoid confusion on the first day of occupancy of the new sanctuary, Engdahl said.

To be Used Weekly -
The church, although still not finished throughout, will be used for all subsequent services following the opening service Sunday. Ground was broken for the church last May, and construction was begun almost immediately by the contractor, Dale Blakely.

In July the church, which had been in use for over 50 years across the street, was moved to part of the foundation to be built into the new structure.
