The flagpole sits on the southern berm coming out of the Bayfield River and Marina. The sign near the flagpole states that the Bayfield River was named after British naval hydrographer Henry Wolsey Bayfield. At one point a flour, grist and sawmill were established on the river. Whitefish, perch, pickerel, and early on, herring, had a consistent market in Toronto, Chicago and New York. Each winter "putting up the ice" involved horses which dragged the block of ice to ice houses on the north shore. Sawdust, from the sawmill insulated the blocks of ice which were sold to hotels, restaurants, and residents.
