The fishing hole is located at the mouth of the Bayfield River. You can drop your bait off the north side of the pier into the Bayfield River, or, should you choose, you could drop it off the south side and into Lake Huron.
A sign near the pier states that the Bayfield River was named after British naval hydrographer Henry Wolsey Bayfield. At one point a flour, grist and sawmill were established on the river. Whitefish, perch, pickerel, and early on, herring, had a consistent market in Toronto, Chicago and New York. Each winter "putting up the ice" involved horses which dragged the block of ice to ice houses on the north shore. Sawdust, from the sawmill insulated the blocks of ice which were sold to hotels, restaurants, and residents.
