In the courtyard of the St. Francis Retreat in San Juan Bautista, Calif. stands a life-size marble statue of St. Francis.

Francis of Assisi was the founder of the Franciscan Order. In 1228, he was canonized by Pope Gregory IX.

Francis is one of the patron saints of Italy. He is also considered the patron saint of animals and the natural environment.

Main belt asteroid 15342 Assisi was discovered on April 3, 1994 by German astronomer Freimut Börngen.
