Two gazelles at the back entrance to Charlottenhof Palace in Potsdam, Germany

While the forefront (facing east) of Charlottenhof Palace in the old Prussian capital Potsdam is adorned with columns and frescoes, the backdoor (facing west) is rather simple in design. That makes the only two pieces of art on this side of the palace really standing out.
Sculptor Friedrich Wilhelm Wolff was so famous for his realistical looking animal sculptures, that he was nicknamed Animal-Wolff. For Charlottenhof, he created two sculptures of Gazelles. The bronze sculptures were placed at the western entrance in 1846. |

Unfortunately, when we visited the palace, there was construction work going on and we could only take an unobstructed picture of one of the two sculptures (default picture). We found some really good pictures on the homepage of fotographer Dieter Kloessing (below).
