After the king's death in 1861, his widow made Charlottenhof her main residence. She lived here until her death in 1873.
After her passing, a bronze bust, made earlier (around 1825) by Prussian sculptor Christian Friedrich Tieck was placed on top of the column. Ever since, the column has been known as die Säule der Königin (the Queen's Column).
