The Washita River originates in the Texas Panhandle, enters Oklahoma, and meanders its way down to the Red River. It has a total length of 295 miles. The river bed is unstable mud and sand, with banks that are erosive red earth. Consequently it is one of the most silt-laden streams in North America, which can readily be seen in the photos provided.
We stumbled upon this area while Waymarking in Carnegie. The gate house and pump house are both in ruins. We understand that the pump house was a three-story concrete building. The River flows from the south at this point, as it races north, then east and south to the southern border of Oklahoma where it terminates at the Red River. It is quite amazing to see the muddy red water racing over the dam and forming whitecaps in the river to its north.
