Site Location: On a tiny rocky island about 20 miles south of Bass Harbor.
Directions to this site: Northeast Harbor, ME - Take whale watching trip to the island.
Nearest City/Town: Bass Harbor, ME
Purpose: Marks the entrance to Frenchman and Blue Hill Bays.

Site established: 1830 by Andrew Jackson
Built: 1830 - Short wooden tower beside stone keeper's house, 1847 - Current Tower.
Ht. Above Sea level: 75 ft
Tower: 58 ft Conical - added 10 ft in 1858
Tower Material: Granite Block
Keeper's Quarters: 1830, 1876, 1893 - 1-1/2 Story Frame
Oil House: 1890's - Brick
Fog Signal Building: 1889 - Whistle - 2 Blasts Every 30 Seconds Continuously.
Bell Tower: 1858 - Not loud enough, so replaced by 1000 lb bell. in 1877 on a 45 ft tower. Still inadequate so replaced by a fog whistle.
Lens: 1858 - 3º Fresnel Lens 1977 - Automated - Aerobeacon.

Best Seen From: By Boat or Air Only - 1-1/2 to 2 hour each way to get to the island. Whale watching trips may not get close enough for good photos.
Notes: This island is a well known Finback & Humpback whale watching site.
A storm moved a 75 ton rock about 60 ft.
1830 - The first light consisted of 8 lamps fueled by whale oil.
1847 - The current tower cost $15,000.
Island is 1800 ft long, 600 ft wide, and 17 ft above sea level. VERY wave swept!
