One of the most recently restored lighthouses that was not so long ago on the most endangered list.

Site Location: On an island in the middle of Cutler Harbor.

Directions to this site: Machias. ME - Take US-1 east, turn south on ME-191 to Cutler Harbor, take tour or charter boat. (Bold Coast Charters)

Nearest City/Town: Machias, ME

Purpose: Marked the entrance to Cutler Harbor, and marked between west Quoddy Head and Seal Island.

Active: Yes, inactive 1975-2001

Site established: 1847 by James K. Polk

Built: 1876

Ht. Above Sea level: 56 ft

Tower: 41 ft Cylindrical

Tower Material: Cast Iron - Brick Lined - White

Keeper's Quarters: 1888 - 1-1/2 Story Victorian

Oil House: 1905 - Brick.

Fog Bell House: Bell Tower Demolished - Fog Horn Blasts Every 10 Seconds day & night.

Lens: 1855 - 5º Fresnel Lens 1975 - Automated - 300 mm Optic on a skeleton Tower.

Light Color: White

Light Characteristics: Flashes Every 6 Seconds

Light Range: 5-6 mi.

Items on Display: Original bell displayed in Cutler. ME.

Notes: Recently restored by American Lighthouse Foundation. Cost about $200,000.
Original light tower and keeper's house were stone, built in 1855 - replaced by the above.
Now this site is part of a bird sanctuary.
