"Eté 1914, a guerre est imminente. Le matin du 3 août 1914, sous les ovations de la foule, le 1er régiment et son dédoublement; le 4e régiment de chasseurs, à pied quittent la caserne d’infanterie qu’il occupe depuis 1883. Commandés par le colonel Jacquet, les chasseurs embarquent dans un train pour Namur, point de concentration de la 4e division. L’invasion allemande de la Belgique a commencé le 4 août 1914. Les chasseurs sont immédiatement dirigés sur Huy avec mission de défendre les passages sur la Meuse. Deux jours plus tard, ils sont appelés en renfort pour prendre part aux combats de Liège. Ils participent à la victoire du Sart-Tilman lors de laquelle est tué au combat le premier officier de réserve de l’armée belge, le lieutenant René Dufrasne.
Durant la Grande Guerre, 1556 chasseurs tomberont pour la Belgique. La bravoure du 1er régiment de chasseurs à pied tout au long du conflit en fait l’un des plus décorés de toute l’armée belge. La caserne porte le nom du caporal Trésignies, en hommage à l’action héroïque accomplie par ce soldat du 2e chasseurs à pied et durant laquelle il perdit la vie le 26 août 1914."
