The Dv16 was one of the standard Finnish medium-weight diesel-hydraulic locomotive classes operated by VR since 1960s. As all the main lines of Finnish railway network were later electrificied, the locomotive was then designated mostly to unelectrified, less frequently used side lines and shunting duties. A total of 28 locomotives were built by Lokomo and Valmet between the years 1962 and 1963. They were retired between 2004 and 2008. Most of the series, 26 locomotives were scrapped, #2026 (this locomotive) was given to the Finnish Railway Museum and #2038 to Haapamäen museoveturiyhdistys ("Haapamäki heritage locomotive society").
