"From this same period (1887-1889) dates the great original clock of the rotunda facing the arena attributed to the architect Auguste Augiere. Its architecture is rather curious (typical of the eclecticism of the late nineteenth century It is richly decorated with allegories of all kinds, sometimes surprising: the large arcade which houses the dial, supported by two massive marble columns, bears the representation of the 12 signs of the zodiac, under the dial two large female allegories And the culture seems to be) by the sculptor Mérignargues, bearing the initials RF, the arcade is surmounted by the emblem of the city of Nîmes, a miniature reproduction of the Roman amphitheater surmounted by the Maison Carrée. The dome-shaped bell-tower contains a carillon of three bells. The square-shaped columns in the form of sheaths supporting this dome bear, engraved, the names of the great ancient civilizations as well as heads, forming capitals , Supposed to represent these great civilizations too.
