Control-tower N - Airport
The silhouette of the tower is the architectural landmark of the airport. In 1995, the Supervisory Board decided to replace the old tower, which was only 18 meters high, from the beginning. He was no longer high enough due to newly constructed buildings. The design of the architect team Behnisch and Partner was carried out in 1990 in a limited architectural competition. The new 48 meter high tower is visible. Directly below the glass viewpoints, the technology for the air traffic control, which was worth around 17 million Marks, was placed in a closed parallelepiped. Overall, the project cost about 30 million marks. The original design had to be reworked as the space requirements were reduced by moving the approach control to the Radarzentrum Langen near Frankfurt. In November 1998 air traffic controllers from the Deutsche Flugsicherung (DFS) took up the tower and the glass office space on the ground.
