This Frieze was originally placed around the foundation of the Pergamon Altar, the center piece of the Acropolis in ancient Pergamon.
When the altar was excavated, the foundation was left in place. The altar and all pieces of the Frieze were shipped to Berlin, where they are now on display in the Pergamon Museum, surrounding the altar.

The entire Frieze is about 450 feet long.
It was created between 170 and 159 BC under the reign of Eumenes II.
