This underground station was built in 1912. Until the opening of
Hauptbahnhof Nord in 1968 it was only called
Hauptbahnhof. It is served by the lines
U1 and
U3.
Originally there were two tube-shaped platforms with two tracks in each one. The outer tracks were served by the circle line (today called U3). The inner tracks belonged to a beside-route to Rothenburgsort. This route was not rebuilt after WW2. The tracks were removed and the tubes connected, so the circle line gets a wide platform, which is now called "Gleis 3+4".
In 1960 another platform ("Gleis 1+2") has been opened beside. It is served by the U1.
