The District nomination shows a contributing building at 117-119 E. Oklahoma as a three-story brick building. Today, the three-story building is addressed 121 E. Oklahoma, and the two-story building west of this is addressed 117. We will describe both buildings, as there appears to be some discrepancy.
The building addressed as 117 E. Oklahoma is a two-story brick building. The aluminum and glass door on the left leads to the second floor and is painted with a sign reading "Music Hall Upstairs". Since the building to the east is a music hall, it cannot be determined whether the second level is open into the second level of the building next door. The storefront has a single aluminum and glass entry door on the right with four display windows to the east. The clerestories are covered with corrugated metal siding. The second level has four single hung windows with aluminum framing. Tall arches above each window connect, with three rows of brick. A fan-shaped transom over each window has been painted. The upper wall has light-colored brick dentil work. The ground floor is occupied by Furrow Flowers and Gifts. It was interesting to note that the Guthrie City Directory from 1910 shows a FURROW & COMPANY, FLORISTS AND SEEDSMEN at another address in town, which may be a forerunner of the current occupant here.
The Guthrie City Directory from 1910 shows the building at 117 E. Oklahoma to be occupied as LARSON'S MILLINERY. The interesting Directory write-up reads: "Misses A. and L. Larson, Proprietors. This fine and up to the instant millinery emporium has been established for the past four years, and is located at number 117 East Oklahoma avenue. The Misses Larson have had an experience in the business of twelve years. They employ expert and tasteful milliners, keep apace with the ever changing fashions of the beau monde, and are splendidly equipped to make suggestions helpful to any lady who may care for the service. The Misses Larson carry an elegant stock of the finest most stylish creations of the milliner's art."
The building now addressed as 121 E. Oklahoma was constructed in 1906, and is three stories at the front, and a tall two stories at the rear. This rear section may be a high-ceiling music hall. The ground floor has a deeply recessed entrance with a single wood door and wood-framed sidelight. A wood stairway west of the door leads to a boarded up doorway. Behind the display window which has glass on the front and east side is a small display room with French doors at the rear. The clerestories are covered with a wood sign reading MUSIC HALL. The building is occupied by Byron's Double Stop Fiddle Shop. Masonic inscriptions show that this building once housed a Masonic Lodge.
The second and third levels have a combined facade with a tall brick arch. The second level has six windows in three sets of two. The third level has fixed windows which are shaped with the arch. Above the arch is a very large keystone and a projecting cornice. A stone panel between the two floors reads "A.F. A.M" with the Masonic square and compass emblem, and two unmarked date blocks. The building is exposed on the east side with most of the arched windows bricked in.
This (these) buildings are listed on the District nomination on Page 19, as Block 50, Lots 3 and 4.
