This district is comprised of both residential and business, with its beginnings starting in 1889. When settlement began, the proclamation authorizing settlement by President Benjamin Harrison, limited town sites to 320 acres. Because of the numbers flocking to the area, and the amount of land settled, four cities comprise today's Guthrie, as the townsite covered almost 1260 acres.
The original commercial district was mostley constructed of brick and stone. This was probably due to the availability of these materials with clay being readily available. This has also contributed to the longevity of the construction.
The vast majority of the residential portion of the district is composed of all frame houses. Many of the home are two story construction, adding the character and beauty of the city.
