This monument to the 42nd Illinois is in recognition of their service during the
Battle of Chickamauga, fought September 19–20, 1863. The 42nd Illinois Infantry was organized at Chicago, Illinois and mustered into Federal service on July 22, 1861.
This monument marks the unit's position on Saturday Sept. 19, 1863, from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m.

Short Physical Description
7'6" x 4'4" x 4'6" high rock-faced monument consisting of rectangular granite block with an inscribed polished front on a granite base. The tops of both pieces are beveled. Marks unit's position from 9/19 at 4:00 p.m. to 9/20/63 at 4:00 a.m.
