This monument is dedicated to the
86th Regiment Illinois Volunteer Infantry and is in recognition of their service during the
Battle of Chickamauga, fought September 19–20, 1863. The 86th Illinois Infantry was organized at Peoria, Illinois and mustered into Federal service on August 27, 1862.
It marks their location from Saturday, September 19, 1863. The commander of the 86th Illinois was Lieutenant Colonel David W. Magee.
