This pyramid of cannon balls marks the location of Major General Thomas Leonidas Crittenden Headquarters at daylight on Sept. 19, 1863, during the Battle of Chickamauga, fought September 19–20, 1863. The XXI Army Corps was part of the Army of the Cumberland .

Short Significance Description:

The marker contributes to the national significance of the park under NR Criterion A because it represents the national movement among veterans to commemorate Civil War battlefields. This was the first U.S. national military park.
 

Long Significance Description:

Monument marks the locaton of the Headquarters of Major General Thomas L. Crittenden on September 19, 1863 while he commanded the 21st Army Corps of the Army of the Cumberland during the Battle of Chickamauga.

Short Physical Description

7'10" square at base and 5' high, the monument consists of a pyramid of cannonballs set in cement & painted black, resting on a molded limestone base. Attached to base is a painted metal plaque identifying the HQ site.



Long Physical Description

Square base is made up of artillery shells: 7 wide by 7 deep. It is 7 layers tall.

Monument is located south of Chickamauga Battlefield near Lee & Gordon's Mill.
