This marker to the 78th Pennsylvania Infantry Regiment is located along a path in the wooded area behind the Brotherton Field on the east side of Lafayette Rd in the Chickamauga National Military Park.

This monument is dedicated to the
78th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry, is in recognition of their service during the
Battle of Chickamauga, fought September 19–20, 1863 and
Chattanooga, TN, November 23-25, 1863.

78th
Pennsylvania
Night of the 18th and forenoon of 19th September, 1863. Held
fords of the Chickamauga protecting McCook’s Corps
marching from McLemore’s Cove to the Battle Field.
Afternoon of 19th followed McCook passing him in
action south of Widow Glenn House.
Formed on crest of hill north of Widow Glenn
House. Charged en echelon across Dyer Field against the
Enemy, then holding these (Brotherton) woods, drove him
Beyond this position, and held it under fire to 9:30 A.M. of
20th. Then ordered to Snodgrass Hills and Formed across
hill east of Snodgrass House. Defending for two hours. A
Battery firing over the regiment from Snodgrass House.
Then by order from Brigade and Division Commanders
Marched over the hill to McFarlands’ gap and formed across
Dry Valley and halted and reformed disorganized troops
Retreating from the broken right wing until after dark.
Was in the movements of 21st on Missionary Ridge and
At night fell back with the army to the new line for the
Defense of Chattanooga.
With the Army of the Cumberland in the subsequent
Engagements about Chattanooga.

Monument contributes to national significance of park under NR Criterion A because it represents the national movement among veterans & related groups to commemorate Civil War battlefields. This was the first U.S. national military park.

Short Physical Description
7'4" x 5'6" x 12' high, monument has 2-step rock-faced base and simple slab-like shaft which is polished on its front and carries an inscription. Acorn is carved into upper step of base. Top is peaked.
Long Physical Description
Monument located within the Chickamauga Battlefield south of the Brotherton Field, map site #229.
