The gardens of Versailles have hundreds of sculptures. This one is located along the side of the pool near the Chateau.

This bronze piece is entitled Nymphe et Amour. In Greek mythology, Nymphs were considered devine spirits...who lived in mountains and groves and led lifestyles free of the strict moral code demanded of real women at the time. Read more about them at (

Amour in this case probably refers to Cupid- here represented as a child bringing the nymph some fruit. The nymph lies on her back half-clothed distracted by something in the distance.
The work is dated 1685-1690 and is by Etienne Le Hongre (1628-1690) and Balthasar Keller (1638-1702). Le Hongre worked on numerous projects at Versailles and other sites around Paris as a member of the Bâtiments du Roi. Read more about him at (
