The Key Block building was constructed in 1902 and is one of the oldest buildings in the downtown area. Hiram Key, its owner, was a Creek Freedman who was influential in the history of African-Americans in Okmulgee. A dry goods store and grocery were run from this location.
This is a two-story brick and sandstone building in the Early Commercial style. The original sandstone wall on the south remains. There are two storefronts. The south one has display windows along Morton Avenue, with its entrance on the south side of the building. The north storefront has a single centered entrance, with display windows on each side.
At the center of the facade is a bay containing a single entry to the upper floor flanked by sandstone columns on the ground level, with brick columns above. The windows on the upper level are wood-framed with one-over-one double hung sashes and brick arches above. A continuous sandstone band runs the length of the facade above and below these windows. Brick corbelling adorns the upper wall. At the center roof line, a triangular pediment contains a stone panel reading "1902 KEY BLOCK".
The storefronts have cloth awnings, with wood paneling covering the clerestories. Wood paneled kick plates are beneath the display windows. This building is occupied by two retail businesses: Truly Yours, advertising Hair, Nails and Massage; and My Fleece & More, a store selling jerseys, hats and uniforms.
This building is Item 113 on the District nomination.
