The 27th Indiana Infantry under the command of Col. Silas Colgrove was one of 200 Federal regiments at Chancellorsville during the fighting in early May 1863. They held a line near Fairview for two days against unrelenting Confederate attacks and were finally forced to withdraw to the rear when their ammunition ran out. Half the regiment had been killed or wounded.
