Katinka byla dcerou pražského meštana a žila po smrti rodicu v Josefove u své sestry, manželky mastickáre a korenáre Vidoniho. Jan Vidoni byl prudké a vznetlivé povahy a prísne strežil pocestnost své švagrové, která byla pekná a okouzlovala svým puvabem josefovské mladíky a dustojníky místní posádky. Tajne se scházela s italským nadporucíkem Famagollim a velice se do nej zamilovala. Nadporucík prišel požadat Vidoniho o ruku Katinky. Podle zákonu musel každý rakouský dustojník složit pred svatbou kauci, aby pri lehkomyslném živote dustojníku nemusela za nej rakouská armáda platit dluhy. Kauci zpravidla platili rodice nevesty. Katinka rodice nemela a nadporucík Famagollim byl chudý, proto doufali že jim peníze dá její švagr. Ten to však odmítl. V této bezvýchodné situaci se milenci rozhodli spolecne ukoncit svuj život. Katinka využila neprítomnosti svého švagra Vidoniho, vzala v kráme jed a cekala ve smluvenou hodinu na svého milence. Ten byl práve ve službe velmi blízko pres hlavní ulici, ale nemohl se dostavit pro necekanou návštevu inspekcního generála. Katinka na neho nepockala, pozrela jed a za strašných bolestí zemrela. Famagolli se dostavil s pulhodinovým zpoždením a když zjistil, že je Katinka mrtvá, vytratil se z pevnosti a už se v Josefove neukázal. Pohreb Katinky Betsageové se konal o pulnoci, za svitu pochodní, byla nesena dustojníky až na konec nove založených sadu, kde byla pochována bez církevních obradu. Tenkrát nebylo možné sebevraha uložit na hrbitove. Velitel pevnosti dal na míste hrobu Katinky postavit malý pomnícek, aby dustojníkum neustále pripomínal, aby si vybírali nevestu z takového stavu, který je schopen zaplatit kauci.
