Michael Deck was born February 17, 1759 in Augusta County, Virginia. He enlisted May 5, 1778, at the age of 19 under Captain Robert Craven. For a short time he served as a bodyguard to George Washington. He first came to Illinois in 1778 with the George Rogers Clark expedition to Cahokia and Kaskaskia. He enlisted again in 1781 under Captain Michael Coker; he was in the battle of Yorktown and witnessed Cornwallis surrender. He moved to Illinois in 1829 and settled in Decksprairie named after him.
