This is the oldest remaining commercial structure in the heart of downtown Eugene. It was built in 1885. The majority of historic downtown was lost to "urban renewal" in the 1960's.

This Italianate style structure was designed by George H. Park who also designed the Shelton McMurphy Johnson house and the original Lane County Courthouse.

Originally named the Baker Hotel when it was built in 1885 it was renamed in 1902 as the Hotel Eugene. The location became the Hotel Smeede in 1907, and was renamed again as the Smeede Hotel in 1914.

The Smeede Hotel was added to the National Register in 1974.
